Webinar: The Fraught Nature of Saying Goodbye: Ethical, Legal, and Training Considerations in the Psychotherapy and Supervisory Processes

Termination is an important but understudied stage of psychotherapy, despite its significance, finality, and the powerful feelings it may evoke. Similarly, termination of supervision at the end of the training year has seldom been studied empirically, but is an important component of the training experience. This workshop will address clinical, ethical, legal, and training considerations associated with the termination process in both psychotherapy and supervision. Key ethical considerations as well as best practice guidelines for guiding trainees through these processes will be reviewed. Case vignettes will be integrated into the presentation to highlight common dilemmas which arise in the termination process for both supervisors and trainees.

Specific topics to be addressed in the workshop include the following: the meaning of termination for clients, trainees, and their supervisors, key clinical, ethical, legal and training considerations in the psychotherapy and supervisory termination processes, responding to different forms of termination, important guidelines in closure and transfer of cases, parallel processes between psychotherapy and supervisory terminations, and the importance of special attention to the final clinical session or supervisory meeting. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the program when attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. A power point slideshow will be shared with attendees.
