Some criteria included, but are not limited to the following:
- Supervisor is consistent, available, timely, and attentive to trainee’s needs.
- Supervisor helps create a safe and brave space allowing for trainee to be vulnerable, open, reflective, and authentic in the learning process.
- Supervisor is able to give honest, helpful, and constructive feedback clearly, sensitively, and in a timely manner.
- Trainee has been supported in gaining knowledge and providing competent clinical care, as seen by improvements in clients.
- Supervisor infuses multiculturalism into the supervision process to help trainee prepare to practice in a multiculturally diverse world.
Some criteria included, but are not limited to the following:
- Site provides a rigorous and ethical training program that prepares trainees for future training experiences.
- Site offers a variety of supervised clinical training opportunities that help create a well-rounded clinician (e.g., individual, family, group therapy; outreach; supervision of other students; case management and advocacy; etc.).
- Site offers opportunity to work with diverse populations (e.g., clinician presentations, race, age, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic statuses, documentation statuses, religions, nationalities, etc.).
- Site creates an atmosphere of collaboration, cohesion, openness, and support within the training cohort as well as between trainees and staff. This includes the site creating a safe and brave space for trainees to be vulnerable, work through challenges, prioritize and explore ethics and diversity, and challenge their fears and insecurities as budding clinicians.
- Site embodies the highest levels of ethical practice, multicultural competence, and a commitment to continued improvement of its program. This includes the site ‘practicing what they preach’, modeling appropriate boundaries and self-care both with its staff as well as within its policies (e.g., time off for self-care).
