Trauma in the LGBTQ+ Community: Overview and Considerations in the Current Sociopolitical Climate
Event held online via Zoom, link to access provided upon registration.
Individuals with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other diverse gender identities and sexualities (LGBTQ+) experience trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at higher rates compared to cisgender, heterosexual peers due to discrimination, identity-based rejection, prejudice, and victimization (Marchi et al., 2023). These experiences can occur on a variety of systemic levels, ranging from intimate relationships to governmental and administrative action to dominant cultural beliefs (Ramos et al., 2023).
The current presentation aims to provide an overview of how trauma and PTSD impact individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. A breakdown of the core symptom clusters of PTSD will be provided and connected to potential clinical presentations. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of how implicit cultural messages, attitudes of the current political administration, and recent policies and legislation impact the LGBTQ+ community in adverse ways, as well as how individuals within this community have attempted to cope with the related decrease in psychological wellbeing (Gonzalez et al., 2022). Lastly, considerations for trauma-informed care with the LGBTQ+ population will be provided and connected to case examples.
This program, when attended in its entirety, offers 1.5 CEs for Psychologists, 1.5 IL CEUS for Counselors and Social Workers, or 1.5 BBS California CEUs for LPCCs, LPSWs, and LMFTs.
Maggie Riemer, PsyD, Clinical Psychologist
Maggie Riemer, PsyD (she/they) is a clinician currently working as a primary/individual therapist in Compass Health Center’s Adult Trauma PHP and IOP. In the trauma program, she works primarily with patients in the LGBTQ+ community, providing them with trauma-informed care, including acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy, in individual sessions. They also co-founded and co-facilitate the program’s Gender and Sexuality cohort, which aims to provide a safe, individualized group space for members of the LGBTQ+ community to process the intersection of their identities and the impact of trauma. As a queer clinician themselves, they are passionate about providing patients with affirming care that centers trust, respect, and collaboration and strive to work from a feminist, multicultural, and systemic orientation that captures a holistic picture of the patient.
